[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_gallery type=”flexslider_fade” interval=”0″ images=”51,54,186″ onclick=”link_image” custom_links_target=”_self” title=”North is Freedom” img_size=”200×200″][vc_column_text css_animation=””]Commissioned by the City of Halifax, North is Freedom was placed in front of the North Halifax Memorial Library. \u00a0This was the site of the famous Halifax explosion of 1917.\u00a0 The piece includes stories and bits of text referencing the history and culture of the neighbourhood.\u00a0 Even Mrs. Johnson’s recipe for black eyed pees and rice is included.\u00a0 2006 Budget $100,000.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_gallery type=”flexslider_fade” interval=”0″ images=”67,66,68″ onclick=”link_image” custom_links_target=”_self” title=”Stiltwalkers” img_size=”200×200″][vc_column_text css_animation=””]Stiltwalkers was commissioned by the City of Ottawa for the West Carleton Community Centre. \u00a0The competition brief asked for a sculptural installation that would have the effect of “linking” the Hobin & Assoc. architects community building and a new hockey arena. \u00a0The West Carleton location is rural so the metaphor was that we are shaped by the land as much as we shape it. \u00a0The bronze figures were largely defined by cast and formed maple leaves.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”” parallax=”” parallax_image=””][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_gallery type=”flexslider_fade” interval=”0″ images=”179″ onclick=”link_image” custom_links_target=”_self” title=”Shelter\/Tissage” img_size=”200×200″][vc_column_text css_animation=””]This is the legacy sculpture for Canada 125 commissioned by the National Capital Commission.\u00a0 I was artist in residence in Canada House in 1992.\u00a0 We cast the faces of 350 people from all across Canada and then turned 55 of those castings into glass and built them into the matrix of the structure.\u00a0 The structure was intended to reference the structures of the aboriginal communities and the development of Canada as a nation.\u00a0 The budget was $120,000.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_gallery type=”flexslider_fade” interval=”3″ images=”69″ onclick=”link_image” custom_links_target=”_self” img_size=”200×200″ title=”Strathcona’s Folly”][vc_column_text css_animation=””]The children’s play area was commissioned by the City of Ottawa for Strathcona Park and is essentially a large sand box.\u00a0 Like a Victorian folly it was inspired by the floor plans of Victorian mansions that were built in the neighbourhood.\u00a0 It was constructed with real found stone pieces of local architectural history.\u00a0 Parents sit and watch over their children as they play among the artifacts of their communities past.\u00a0 1992 Budget $70,000.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″][vc_gallery type=”flexslider_fade” interval=”0″ images=”70″ onclick=”link_image” custom_links_target=”_self” title=”Structure” img_size=”200×200″][vc_column_text css_animation=””]Positioned behind the mayor’s desk in the City of Ottawa Council Chambers this piece references the 11 municipalities that were amalgamated to form Ottawa.\u00a0 11 pieces of granite appear to be a close fit… but not quite.\u00a0 Two cast glass figures climb on and try to shift the structure. 1992 Budget $40,000.<\/p>\n
